Knitwear Still Big for Winter and Bigger for Spring 2013

The Guardian has just profiled women's knitwear as a forward fashion favourite for winter and for spring. An already established trend over Christmas, as many took comfort in logo-adorned and motif-printed colourful woollens, the homespun touch seems to have launched itself for a long time to come.

A core reason why the humble knitted jumper might be seeing so much success is that it appears to embody both functionality whilst absorbing trend after trend. Many movements have found themselves on the front of a woolly jumper. Last year the Goth explosion took over, with skulls and crosses stitched into practically everything. The jumper held it well, with mohair a good look in stark contrasts of black, white and red. There were also love hearts and cute animals for those that were keen to keep it a little less dark.

This season, and looking ahead to spring, the knitwear has retained its motif theme. Flowers and patterns are going big as the weather eventually gets warmer, but for now, prints are big, bold and beautiful. From retro space invader prints, to big white stars, the trend seen in shops is about making sure the jumper gets seen under our jackets.

The big designers have showcased their pieces, but the High Street, always head-to-head with trends, has a few versions of their own that do exactly what their couture counterparts do. New Look, who seem to really flourish at bringing big trends immediately to the high street as they happen, is bursting with knitwear - from the textured to the striped and everything in between.

But what to team with these pieces? Pretty much anything goes when it comes to knitwear.
