Breaking News: Fashion's Night Out Has Been Cancelled for 2013

Fashion's Night Out, the September event of store hopping, celebrity sighting, and drinks galore, has been cancelled in all US cities for 2013.

According to WWD, official reasons have to do with backlash from brands who had to spend increasing resources on the event during an already hectic Fashion Week: "The sponsors of the event-Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and NYC & Co.-made the joint decision to go on hiatus so retailers and designers can focus their budgets on projects that are more in line with their specific objectives, rather than a big event on one night in September."

Fashion's Night Out was launched in 2009 to celebrate shopping at a time when it was the city desperately needed to jump-start the economy. After a positive response, the event was launched again for 2010, 2011, and in 2012 the event had expanded to stores in over 500 cities nationwide and 30 cities around the world. Although FNO got people excited about shopping for the latest fall fashions while partying with favorite celebrities, retailers found that each year the event demanded more and more of their resources.

Steven Kolb, chief executive officer of the CFDA, on behalf of the initiative, said, "We are immensely proud of the program and are grateful to all of our partners in fashion and retail. In addition to giving retailers a positive boost, Fashion's Night Out also served to highlight the incredible economic impact and the millions of jobs that the fashion industry supports."

Kolb also went on to say that each year they would reflect on the past and collectively decide if they should continue on with the event. They started FNO when the recession hit. Now that the economy is better, retailers can focus on "designer appearances and promotional events held throughout the year."

WWD reports that the event will still be staged in select international cities.
